Florida Constitution Revision Commission

PUB 700730: Elected Florida Public Service Commission by Justin Serian

ARTICLE X: MISCELLANEOUS, New Section.

Catchline: The People's Public Service Commission

I propose adding a constitutional admendment that would require the Public Service Commission become an elected board once again. Furthermore, since they will be responsible for ensuring that the taxpayers get a fair deal against what is monopolies, they should have campagin finance rules similar to that of what judges currently have. I added a couple excerpts from a May 2017 news article that outlines political contributions and profits for FPL's parent company to support my reasoning. For far too long Florida taxpayers have financed utilities exploration gambles and had to pick up the tab for their lack of routine maintenance to their service grid while investors rake in the profits. It's time to correct that wrong.

In a swift 17-minute meeting held in a Oklahoma City hotel Thursday, NextEra Energy won shareholder approval of a $31 million compensation package for its five top executives, and defeated two proposals aimed at increasing transparency over how the company is handling sea level rise and political contributions.

“The company you own had a very strong 2015,'' declared NextEra president and CEO Jim Robo.

A Herald/Times analysis of campaign records at the Florida Division of Elections found that FPL alone spent $2.3 million on candidates and campaigns in the last six months of 2015.
